REAL MADRID AND FC BARCELONA MUTUALLY AGREE A JOINT METAVERSE PARTNERSHIP

The two most successful football teams in Spain, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have filed for a joint Metaverse trademark. This application heralds the clubs’ plans to provide their fans with virtual reality experiences that include gaming and crypto transaction management software. The Spanish soccer giants are not the only football clubs to foray into NFTs and virtual reality as Crystal Palace Football Club have submitted their own application to launch NFTs, crypto online stores and virtual clothing.

Despite a long history of fierce rivalry on the pitch, the two clubs have shaken hands on an agreement that will set the precedent for a mutual jump into the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Although the two clubs filed for a metaverse trademark application a week ago, it was recently confirmed by attorney Mike Kondoudis.

The joint endeavour is still surprising to many as the two clubs symbolize two different values. FC Barcelona is a sporting symbol of the Catalan region while Real Madrid is heavily tied to the royal family and is a symbol of traditional Spanish culture. The matches between the two teams are greatly recognized as football’s biggest fixture and are known as “El Classico”.

Some of the products that the teams will be offering to their fanbase through this partnership include virtual reality gaming, virtual clothing including footwear and headgear, cryptocurrency transaction management through downloadable software that can also be used as a virtual wallet and much more.

FC Barcelona already forayed into cryptocurrency since December last year. They partnered with NFT marketplace Ownix in an NFT project that will showcase iconic moments from the club’s history as digital collectibles. FC Barcelona President, Joan Laporta outlined that the project will give fans a chance to own a piece of the club’s legacy.

However, the club withdrew from the agreement shortly after because an Ownix executive, Moshe Hogeg, was accused of sexual assault and falsification of documents. The club was also looking for a new sleeve sponsor at the beginning of 2022. The options were narrowed to Polkadot blockchain protocol and Spotify, a streaming service. Barcelona ultimately settled for Spotify after a few months of evaluation.
