ETHEREUM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL DATE FOR THE MERGE

The Ethereum Foundation has confirmed that Its long-awaited Merge will be completed a few days after the Bellatrix upgrade kicks of the final countdown in September’s first week. This is exciting news because the merge is coming sooner than expected.

According to Ethereum Foundation’s new blog post, the migration of the Ethereum mainnet from a Proof-of-Work network to a Proof-of-Stake network will happen between 10th and 20th September alongside the Bellatrix upgrade which will be activated on the Beacon chain and will be responsible for setting the merge in motion.

The Ethereum Foundation announced that the Merge activation is slated for epoch 144896 on the Beacon Chain. This should happen by 11:34:47 AM UTC on 6th September 2022. The execution layer’s portion of the transition, Paris, will be triggered by the Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) value of 58,750,000,000,000,000,000,000 following this.

The Ethereum team also reiterated that the exact date of the Merge will be decided by the Proof-of-Work (PoW) hash rate. This means the more hash rate joins the network, the sooner TTD will be triggered. On the other hand, if the hash rate leaves the network, TTD will be delayed.

Ethereum developers earlier speculated that the transition date could be around 15th and 16th September. Ahead of the transition, critical bugs were discovered recently in the mainnet update of the ETH clients, the Nethermind and Go ETH. The developers however fixed the bugs just a day after their discovery.
